Sports Direct Called ‘Offside’ By Parliament | José Mourinho’s Trust for Wayne Rooney | This Week In Tweets! – Legends Report

The high street sports retailer Sports Direct has been likened to a Victorian workhouse by a parliamentary committee, after claims of employee maltreatment by unions and a report by The Guardian newspaper. Mike Ashley, the CEO of Sports Direct, claims that he was unaware of the company paying employees less than the minimum wage and of the questionable working practices of employing 3,000 tempory staff.

Mr Ashley has been questioned by a parliamentary committee over his leadership of the company and will be held accountable by the committee’s chairman, Iain Wright, who has promised to:

“continue to hold Mr Ashley’s feet to the fire, in as constructive a manner as possible, checking on the progress he makes on improving working conditions for workers at his premises.”

Mr Ashley also admitted to the committee that the company was under investigation by HM Revenue & Customs for failing to pay staff the minimum wage.

What this example shows us is the fact that if we don’t care for people and treat them as human beings, then there are very natural and real consequences. These can be fractured relationships, a breakdown of trust and a withdrawal of credibility. In this business example, Sports Direct and Mike Ashley are now being held accountable by the government, (costing them more time, effort and money) to ensure that they follow through on their promises to improve conditions for their workers. This is in sharp contrast to other retail companies like Virgin Group, who prioritise staff welfare in the knowledge that the investment in people will naturally bring about higher profits and better value for all stakeholders.

How does someone build trust with their new boss and make sure they won’t get fired or replaced? Ask José Mourinho, who has made very clear what he thinks of the England and Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, who has had a very disappointing summer after being knocked out of the European Tournament;

“He is the club captain, he is the manager’s captain, he is the players’ captain.

“I trust him a lot. I think he’s going to be a very important player for me and no problem for him.

“He knows that he has to work hard, he knows that but I think that is nothing new in his career. Everything he has got I see nobody offered him, he had to fight for it.”

Mr Mourinho isn’t concerned by a few bad performances. He can see Mr Rooney’s track record, his character, his credibility and his dedication to his club and his country. This is why there is no doubt in José Mourinho’s mind as to where his captain’s future lies.

This is such an important reminder for us all. It is not the rare mistakes we make, but how we continually perform and how we respond to those mistakes that builds our trust and the credibility we earn with others. For the full story, click here.
