Michael Bloomberg – Green Competitive Advantage | The Truth About Sighs! | Robin Williams’ Son Teaches Prisoners – Legends Report

Recently we featured a powerful 3 minute video of the impact that mankind has had on the world. On Monday, Michael Bloomberg, former New York Mayor, highlighted a very clear business case for companies to start being part of the solution. It’s an example of how, no matter which angle you come from, you cannot deny the timeless principle of sustainability. Speaking to the Financial Times, he said,
“One of the things you find today when you interview prospective employees who have choices, they want to know what you are doing about the environment. It’s a competitive advantage when recruiting when you can say ‘this is what our company is doing to save the planet’.”
Mr Bloomberg is appealing to business leaders in a way that they can relate to through the recruitment paradigm because he understands the critical importance of empathy in bringing people together to create solutions. While people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of looking after our planet, not everyone relates to it in the same way. Without empathy we cannot work together to help our world in a way that’s also in line with our interests. For more on the story, click here.
In a fascinating discovery, Californian scientists have announced this week that sighing is not a symptom of stress or anxiety, but rather, it is actually an unconscious function of the brain to help sustain our lungs and even keep us alive! Professor Jack Feldman, from the University of California Los Angeles states that,
“If you don’t sigh every five minutes or so, the alveoli (tiny sacs within our lungs that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move between the lungs and bloodstream) will slowly collapse causing lung failure. That’s why patients in early iron lungs had such problems, because they never sighed.”
In our daily lives, many of us don’t actually breathe as deeply as we need to in order to get the oxygen we need! Nature however has in-built systems and processes to keep us alive, fit and healthy. Nature is a great example of how natural principles of success work so well. But if you’re not sure how to sigh, just watch this short clip:

Zak Williams suffered a great loss through his father, Robin Williams’ tragic death, but he has found an opportunity to not only help others, but find a purpose and meaning for himself too. Recently he has taken up teaching economics at San Quentin Prison in California. He has seen an incredible opportunity to educate inmates and shift their perceptions about a subject that, had they been aware of earlier, may have steered them clear of prison:
“Understanding and having a healthy relationship with money is absolutely core towards personal success” – Zak Williams
The impact Mr Williams has had on inmates is incredible. It is testament to something he credits his father for – a sense of deep compassion and respect towards other human beings. You can watch the short video of Mr Williams on CNN below…
