LATEST NEWS – What Differentiates a Good Athlete From a Great One? – Legends Report

By Jairaj Singh, Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International

If you live in the UK you may well have stayed up late on Saturday night to watch a very special night of athletics at the Olympics. It was a re-run of 4 years ago in London where long distance legend Mo Farah, heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill and long-jumper Greg Rutherford all won gold in their respective events.

While it would have been an even more incredible achievement for history to repeat itself, that wasn’t the thing that inspired me the most. I was watching it and found myself enthralled at the determination, discipline and drive these human beings showed despite challenging circumstances.

There was one moment in particular that was very moving. Mo Farah was tripped and fell over during the 10,000m race. He got up and eventually won the race but he spoke about the mental and emotional energy the fall took out of him after the race.

In his interview, it struck me as to what makes a great athlete compared to a good one. When they are faced with the most challenging circumstances they dig deep and find another gear. They don’t let themselves be dictated to by circumstances around them. They DECIDE, they CHOOSE how they want things to be. Mo Farah could have easily gone into a downward spiral after his fall and many athletes may have done so. But he didn’t, he got up, calmed himself down and then thought about his family and what the race meant to him. That’s why he won because in that moment he chose to see things differently. He decided what his future was going to be and we can learn a hell of a lot from that…like for example…..what are you going to decide about your own future this week?
