Dwayne Johnson Gets on The “22 Challenge” | Papa John’s Partnership Sporting Success | 96 Yr Old Veteran Cycles 260 Miles For Jo Cox – Legends Report
By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
Last year millions of people across the world chose to make a massive difference through the viral campaign: The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This year, actors like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Chris Pratt and Chris Evans are championing war veterans who sadly struggle to fit into life back in society and commit suicide.
The 22 Challenge has been dubbed so because the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that 22 veterans take their own lives, on a daily basis. Now, whether that number is accurate, and whether or not you feel this is a charity fad, the reality is that men and women are resorting to ending their lives because of how much they are struggling. People want to get behind something that means something to them deeply and personally. All of us will feel drawn to helping people in specific situations based on what we value and care about. Without a strong purpose, very little can happen. As human beings, we need purpose in what we do – it is a fundamental principle. Dwayne Johnson himself has battled with Depression as we have reported on recently.

Papa John’s pizza has recently announced that their partnerships with sporting events like the NFL, Major League Baseball and the Superbowl helped them to grow their business. While these are all longstanding partnerships, sales are up 4.8% on a ‘same-store’ measure over the last quarter, which the company attributes in part to a new promotion in connection with Major League Baseball.
When legendary organisations work together and focus on the human, community element that connects them, then the benefits for both parties increase.
“Watching sports is all about sharing an experience. Pizza, too, is meant to be a shared experience,”
Explains Robert Thompson, senior vice president of marketing at Papa John’s. This link demonstrates that when two organisations come together to serve a common client the benefits increase for everyone involved. Papa John’s sells more pizza. The fans enjoy themselves more as they can bond over the food and the sport. While the sports themselves benefit with more people enjoying the experience and potentially inviting new fans. Papa John’s however, is doing more than just looking for short term gain. The company is investing in the future of sport in America. As Business Insider reports,
In 2015, the company sponsored its first Papa John’s Youth Baseball Invitational in Hialeah, Florida, focusing on inner-city kids. The same year, Papa John’s threw a stadium-wide pizza party for Clemson University’s football team to celebrate an undefeated regular season.

96 Year Old Veteran Honours Jo Cox With 260 Mile Cycle
By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner, Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
On Wednesday this week, British WWII veteran Franklin Medhurst, aged 96, will cycle 260 miles in honour of Jo Cox, the MP who was recently shot and killed near her home.
Speaking of why he is compelled to do so, Mr Medhurst said,
“Then we had the tragedy … I hadn’t previously known about Jo, I’m not hugely political, but what came across loud and clear in the following days was her personality. More importantly, the superb principles she held and her values really struck a chord with me and so many people around the world, the fact that communities are dependent on each other, we are much stronger when people are working together.”
Jo Cox’s life was ended far too early. But because of who she was – a lighthouse standing very CLEARLY for values and principles like empathy, compassion and unity, she has awoken a spirit in millions of people across the world. In dark times, this is absolutely what our world needs – for people to genuinely stand up for positive, progressive, upbuilding, healthy values. It inspires others in ways we cannot imagine. It is not easy – it takes courage, dedication and perseverance, but the results are far beyond what we can imagine. Mr Medhurst is doing something at an age where most would expect him to be relaxing at home. Why? Because he cares and because he was so deeply moved by one woman’s courage to live her life by powerful values.
