Prince’s Brilliant Response To Matt Damon | Rethinking Money By Stephen Hawking | UK Banishes Plastic Bags – Legends Report
By Jairaj Singh, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International
Sometimes even legends can be humbled in the presence of greatness. Prince is one of those who will surely go down as one of the most influential musicians of all time and his epic response to meeting actor Matt Damon shows why…
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last week, the actor recounted the exchange he had with the late musician following a concert at the O2 Arena, London, in 2007.
When they went back stage afterwards, Damon, making small talk, asked Prince:
“So you still live in Minnesota don’t you?”
To which Prince, according to Damon, looked him dead in the eye and said:
“I live inside my own heart Matt Damon”
While it’s a funny story, it also has a powerful lesson. True legends live from the inside-out, they aren’t attached to places or situations or things on the outside, they have a rootedness within themselves which is where their confidence comes from. Watch the full clip here…
Stephen Hawking Says We Need To Rethink Wealth After Brexit
As a physicist, Stephen Hawking doesn’t make political comments very often, yet when he does, there is a wisdom behind his words that applies to many areas of society. In his piece for the Guardian this weekend he drew the lessons from Britain’s decision to leave the EU. He cited that normal people feel the vast imbalance in wealth between rich and poor and that this balance needs to be readdressed. In his article he speaks about how we view money, and how we ought to. Many of us see money as a main goal in life, he says it’s more of a means to a beginning or an enabler:
“Although wealth has played an important practical role in my life, I have of course had a different relationship with it to most people. Paying for my care as a severely disabled man, and my work, is crucial; the acquisition of possessions is not. I don’t know what I would do with a racehorse, or indeed a Ferrari, even if I could afford one. So I have come to see money as a facilitator, as a means to an end – whether it is for ideas, or health, or security – but never as an end in itself.
Interestingly this attitude, for a long time seen as the predictable eccentricity of a Cambridge academic, is now more widely shared. People are starting to question the value of pure wealth. Is knowledge or experience more important than money? Can possessions stand in the way of fulfilment?”
Money is a fruit and those who attract a lot of it know that it starts with creating value. For more on this check out 10 billionaires who disprove the myth that you need money to make money here…
Britain Reduces Plastic Bag Usage By Over 85%!
Sometimes it’s the small changes that can make a big difference. A report out this weekend a year after the UK introduced a 5p charge for plastic bag shows almost 6 billion have been taken out of circulation. A reduction of over 85%! Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants that humans put into the sea and this success shows how we can make small changes to our habits to make a big impact on the environment. While there is much more work to do in many countries, it shows human beings are motivated to do good things when we feel there is something to lose. The 5p charge may be small, but imagine if we could apply it to other areas to increase recycling? Imagine if that then happened worldwide! Thérèse Coffey, the environment minister, told the Telegraph that:
“Taking six billion plastic bags out of circulation is fantastic news for all of us – it will mean our precious marine life is safer, our communities are cleaner and future generations won’t be saddled with mountains of plastic sat taking hundreds of years to breakdown in landfill sites.
“It shows small actions can make the biggest difference, but we must not be complacent as there is always more we can all do to reduce waste and recycle what we use.”
