Legends Report – London Restaurants Affected By Paris Attacks | Interview – Guantanamo Bay Ex-Prisoner | Aung San Suu Kyi Picking Up Litter

By Jatinder Singh, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International

In a powerful example of just how interconnected our lives are, a recent report showed how sales have fallen at London’s restaurants since the Paris terrorist attacks in November because of increased fears from the public about similar incidents happening.

We live in a highly connected world and it’s no longer a case of “the problem is out there,” because of increasing globalisation and the ability of news and information to travel instantly through social media. We are so much more connected than ever before and so when something happens, it affects so many people in a variety of ways because the world, like its people are interdependent. What we do affects others and what they do affects us. For more on this story click here.

Incredibly Moving Interview With Shaker Aamer Released From Guantanamo Bay

“Abdul Shaker with Children” Family photograph

Shaker Aamer was held in Guantanamo Bay as an innocent man for 14 years! After being released recently, he has been giving a series of interviews about his experiences. What is remarkable is the humility and lack of anger at how he was treated in some of the harshest conditions imaginable, especially as those who were holding him agreed he was innocent over 7 years ago! He says:

‘You cannot forget it, but you try to seal it, and put it where it’s not really bothering you. The way I grew up with my family, we give trust a lot, and you have seen me, you know me by now, I trust people still. You get along much better if you do. You can’t live your life being careful, having doubts about everything. You must embrace it.’

Shaker Aamer has lost many years of his life including never seeing one of his sons before. He provides us all with an incredible example of shining light to take a tragic situation and see the positives in it. After all, Shaker knows he can’t turn back time and holding anger at his treatment would damage the rest of his life with his family. For the amazing full interview click here.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s opposition leader has been physically picking up litter in her constituency as part of her wider campaign of cleaning Burma’s political system. She led the way as part of this symbolic act of service to the public with others in her constituency soon following her. She even told photographers to stop taking photos and to start helping!

Aung San Suu Kyi is a wonderful example of a leader who leads at the front with integrity and humilty by setting the example to inspire and serve others not herself. For more on this story click here.
