Emma Watson’s Hiding Books On The Underground! | Wei Wei Beckons World For Human Rights | Chicago Cubs End 108 Year Wait To Win! – Legends Report
By Kris Deichler, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
It’s been revealed that actress, model and UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women, Emma Watson, has been secretly leaving books for commuters on London’s busy underground system. As part of the Books On the Underground campaign, set up for commuters to share their favourite books with others travelling the ‘tube’, Emma Watson has now created her own project and online feminist book club in support of her UN work for women, called Our Secret Shelf.
Some of the 100 books she has distributed have already been found and shared on social media, clearly making each unsuspecting commuter’s day! Readers are invited to join her feminist book club to share their thoughts and insights online, via the site Goodreads. There will be a new book and new discussion every month. Her book club introduction says:
“As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.”
Great books are something many of us treasure because of the impact they can make on our lives and how they help us to connect with experiences and stories that mean something to us personally. They’re a great way for people to learn about themselves, people and life from different perspectives. Gaining a different outlook on ourselves and the world can help us see things in ways we might not have done otherwise, which can bring important and positive changes to our attitudes and the way we live. Ms Watson is showing the kind of creative initiative that natural leaders and legends have in helping to make a difference to people and, by opening the debate to readers online, she’s using the project to learn and engage with real people about real issues. Something that will naturally only empower her understanding and any future work she undertakes.

In the past 50 years, China has become one of the world’s biggest economic powers, but how well do we understand its culture? In a previous Legends Report article, we learned how Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei campaigns for human rights within China. Rights like the freedom of speech for artists and young people in China are communicated through his contemporary artwork. He himself has faced detention and been banned from leaving the country in the past by government officials due to his campaigns.
In a recent event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Mr Wei Wei was commenting on the need for trading partners to China to maintain pressure for freedom of speech within the country. Partners like the U.S. traded £598 billion with China in just 2015. He said:
“It doesn’t matter it will hurt me or not, you have to do what you think is right… “You [referring to U.S. public and trading partners as a whole to China] have to believe they have to listen. You know, they have to care about their business partner…or they have to respect.”
He later expanded on recent events involving lawyers who had defended Mr Wei Wei’s freedom of speech movement, saying that:
“If you touch any political issues there’s no such thing as rule of law. It’s getting really very bad, I should say, the situation. It’s almost no space.”
Mr Wei Wei’s work is inspiring as it reminds us all of the need for more awareness within our rapidly increasing consumer driven society. What impact are our buying habits having on the countries and people we are buying from? What are we indirectly encouraging in the world? It’s a call to ask questions and to be curious about our impact. For the full article click here…

Chicago Cubs End 108 Year Wait For World Series Title!
By Jatinder Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
We reported last week that Baseball team the Chicago Cubs made it to the final of the World Series competition. They went one better yesterday when they won the best of seven games series 4-3 in the decider against the Cleveland Indians!
Their series win ends their 108-year drought since they last won the competition in 1908. As can be imagined, there were many tears of joy from fans and much celebration.
Here are a few of the messages that reflected the victory including one from the President of The United States who supports rival Chicago team, the White Sox. There is also a very very happy Bill Murray who is known for being a passionate Cubs fan:
It happened: @Cubs win World Series. That’s change even this South Sider can believe in. Want to come to the White House before I leave?

While this is just ‘sport’ the reactions show just how much this victory has united the people of Chicago. Indeed many fans were writing the name of their loved ones who had died since the last time the Cubs won the World Series, on a wall inside the world famous Wrigley stadium:

A quote from Cubs supporter, 22-year-old Jason Nye sums up the feeling for this victory
“I’ve been waiting my whole life for this, my grandfather has been waiting his whole life for this, everyone has been waiting for this.”
