What’s Your Relationship With Money? | Child Anxiety Rising With World Issues | David Beckham’s Investment Challenges – Legends Report
By Jatinder Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
Success Magazine’s latest podcast discusses the relationship we have with money. They review how a lot of our preconceptions about money come from how our parents viewed it, as well as exploring the need to build good habits around money if we are to have a healthy relationship with it:
“Money won’t create success, the freedom to make it will.”
– Nelson Mandela
“Think about your goals. We need to give our money meaning. We’re just spending and saving money without knowing why.”
– Farnoosh Torabi (Host of the podcast)
Ultimately, the authors are helping us realise that the relationship we have with money has to be treated in the same way as the relationship we have with ourselves and other people. We need to be able to identify why we feel the way we do about money, whether that is in a positive or negative light, and to be ready to make changes to improve this.
A fascinating aspect of the episode is that many of us inherit our views about money from our parents, something that applies to many of our other beliefs in life too. Ultimately, legends know they have to be prepared to look at their belief systems and question what is true or not, while making changes accordingly. Doing this empowers them to control their lives, rather than being dictated to by their circumstances. To read more and listen to the podcast, click here…

The British children’s charity, the NSPCC, has reported a marked increase in calls relating to anxiety; with a connection to world issues from the last 6 months. This has come from calls made to the charity’s ‘Childline’ – a free confidential counselling service available to children. According to the charity, the worries expressed by children have in particular been about the Brexit referendum, terrorism, and even the US election. Dame Esther Rantzen, president of Childline, told the Telegraph newspaper:
“At Childline we know children and young people are sometimes frightened and distressed by events in the wider world… Seeing pictures of crying and bewildered toddlers being pulled from bomb-damaged homes upsets all of us… Often we fail to notice the impact these stories are having on young people.”
We live in a world of 24-hour news coverage where the dark and distressing realities we face are much harder to hide from. Hearing the effect this is having on children and young people is a humbling and concerning reality that, more than anything, must ask of us all what world we want our children to grow up into? It’s easy to feel that as individuals we are helpless to change and improve situations around us, but we can all do our part, no matter how small. Even if this is just in our attitude to events.
We must learn to focus less on the problems that are out there, and more so on the solutions we want to create, as well as what news there is of inspiring and positive events too… which is one of the various reasons why the Legends Report exists! The more we help young people to see problems as opportunities to be solved, rather than avoid them out of fear, the more we can empower them to make better choices than perhaps we have done. David Beckham has often shown his strength of character on the football pitch and his dedication and persistence to improving as a player. Now he is showing the same character in relation to an investment challenge that is proving far harder to come to fruition than he and his business partners expected. In February 2014, Mr Beckham announced that he would be developing a football franchise in Miami for the American football league, known as Major League Soccer (MLS). As of yet, little progress has been made, with many unexpected challenges coming his way. However, his team has stated he will continue with his plans to build the Miami franchise. He said back in February 2015:
“I mean, delays are always frustrating, but to get it right, sometimes there are delays. And we will get it right and it will happen. It’s taken a little bit longer than we thought.”
One and a half years on from that statement, he and his team remain committed to their goal, as stated by one of his spokesmen interviewed by the Daily Telegraph.
This story shows the importance of taking a longer-term term view on any major goal and investment, and of having the right team and partners around to support you when things don’t go to plan. It would have been very easy after all these unexpected delays for Mr Beckham and his team to shelve their plan and go onto something else. However, they know that doing anything worthwhile takes time. Furthermore, they are working with people who are supporting their vision. Indeed, MLS Executive Vice President Dan Courtemanche made a statement recently to the Daily Telegraph, where he said:
“We are supportive of David and his partners’ vision to build a stadium in the urban core of Miami in the Overtown neighbourhood. Although this process has taken time, we know that they are focused on finalising the right stadium plan in order to bring MLS to Miami. “
