SolarCity is one of the companies headed up by Elon Musk, along with Tesla and Space X. Yesterday the solar power company launched a new concept in the use of solar power in homes, by making steps forward in the integration of the cells into the roof structure. Now, instead of a few panels being ‘retrofitted’, or a few tiles integrated into the roof, the whole roof, is now the solar ‘panel’ and it looks just like a normal roof!
Combined with the Tesla Powerwall that another of Elon Musk’s companies has produced, the complete system will decentralise power generation, and reduce the need for transmitting electrical energy over long distances; saving time, money and effort for everyone. This announcement from SolarCity and Elon Musk is all part of a bigger picture and plan for how we can transition our way of life towards a more sustainable future. It may also build towards the ultimate goal that Mr Musk has, building a sustainable civilisation on Mars. The homes and buildings there will need electrical power and this development, might pave the way to creating self-sustaining homes on the red planet. Here is the summary of his announcement…
