Let’s face it, it’s easy for people to be your friend and to support you when you’re at your best, when you’re nice and kind to them, when things are going well and you’re succeeding in life… But what happens if your life turns upside down, if you really mess up, fall from grace and you’re at your worst? Who will stick around to love, care for and support you back onto your feet, when there’s every reason not to!? Those are the people you can really count on. Robert Downey Jr. knows this and in this incredibly touching speech about how Mel Gibson was there for him in his darkest times, he teaches us what love, care and support for someone really means, as well as compassion and forgiveness…

As human beings we are all fallible, we all fall down and we all have a darker side – even legends. When life knocks us down, when we’re really hurting on the inside, it can often result in very negative and destructive behaviour, towards ourselves and others. We shouldn’t condone such behaviour if/when it happens, but we must understand it because, when/if this happens to us, we all deserve redemption. Our darkest times can often be the making of us as a person because of what they teach us if we get the help we need to get through them.
There’s something I read once that has stuck with me ever since; it said that every act of negativity; whether it’s anger, hostility, or nastiness etc, is essentially a cry for help – a cry for love. What Robert Downey Jr. is showing us here, is that we need to put aside our judgements and see people for who they can be, at their very best, and encourage them to get there, no matter how far they might fall from it.
