Oprah’s upbringing in a poor family in Mississippi wasn’t an easy one. As a young girl she was sexually abused by male relatives and friends of her mother. Certainly not what people may first expect when you see what she has achieved in her life – becoming one of the most influential women in America and a billionaire philanthropist. As she expresses in the quote above, both society and her family saw her as someone destined for a life of mediocrity. This was a huge turning point for Oprah as she realised that she didn’t have to live a life dictated to her by others – or by her past.

She constantly nurtured a belief that her past wouldn’t equal her future and that she had the power to choose over circumstances. This is a fundamental belief that has driven every legend, both past and present, to achieve great things!

We can all too often have those thoughts of ‘I can’t do this because…’, or ‘That isn’t possible because…’. Well, when we nurture the belief of ‘I can choose’, or ‘My past doesn’t equal my future’ we begin to ask questions like ‘How can I make it happen?’, even when it seems futile… Great leaders always find a way no matter what life throws at them!
