A Dose of Inspiration To Get You Moving

This is a really powerful piece of wisdom about parenting from author, speaker and psychologist Dr. Shefali on the Oprah Winfrey show; it does however apply to all our relationships. In this she explains how the expectations we have of others can suffocate our relationships, because they turn love into a desire to control. This can especially be the case between a parent and child, and it’s here that Oprah Winfrey herself shares a moving personal experience, where she pressurised a young girl into doing something for the wrong reasons…

The key here is realising our responsibility. Before we look at another person and get angry, or blame them for not doing what we want of them, first, we need to look at ourselves. Are we seeing the way we feel as their fault; blaming them for not coming through for US? Or are we openly listening to and understanding where they are coming from to know why they feel the way they do. As long as we are closed to the other person because of the outcome WE want, we cannot develop trust, and a meaningful understanding with them.
