Eckhart Tolle – How To Stop Worrying

For many people, the thought of a future event we may be anxious about can be terrifying and lead to hours or days of worry. For example, a future presentation, exam, date or meeting with the boss can all create huge stress!

In the book, a New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, he describes how our minds take these concerns and think about the future situation almost continuously and replaying every possible outcome. Good or bad, (and usually bad) the mind keeps running the video of that future situation until we can go crazy with worry and become incredibly anxious until that day finally arrives.

How then, do we find peace from this incessant thinking, which is often tiring, boring and ultimately useless, because the reality is never the same as our projected thoughts?

This 11-minute video from Eckhart Tolle, illustrates how to become more aware of our worries and constant thoughts, then as he describes, how to let them go and be more present in this moment. Take some time to be still and really become aware of how you feel as you watch this video.

Remember, everything that happens, happens in the present.

Everything that has happened in the past, happened in the present.

It’s a bit of tough concept to get, I definitely struggle and still miss the point a lot of the time, but there is no point in worrying about a situation in the future (or past) because you physically can’t do anything about it in the present. You have to wait for that moment to arrive in the present before you can do anything about it. This is not the same as not preparing for the best outcome. ‘Be Prepared’ is still a very valid and practical maxim for a meeting, presentation, holiday and to make the most of every day. However, you cannot actually change anything until you get to that point in time when you are in the meeting, date, or situation that you are planning for. So stop worrying about it. You can only affect what is happening in this present moment, so that is where your attention needs to be.
