Film actor Leonardo DiCaprio has spent the last 3 years with director Fisher Stevens travelling the world and seeing the effects of climate change as well as interviewing inventor and businessman Elon Musk, Pope Francis, President Obama, John Kerry and several leading experts in the field.

The film will be aired on the National Geographic Channel. It was announced this week that it will then be made available for streaming for free. This decision has been made because the producers feel the message needs to get out to the world as fast as possible. More details of the film can be found here on the Huffington Post website, but the fact that a legend such as Leonardo DiCaprio is taking the time to focus on this issue and take action on it adds weight to the urgency of climate change decisions. Legends such as Mr DiCaprio have learnt that their fame and influence can be put to good use in raising awareness of the issues facing us all. Acting as a ‘spokesman’ the same film made by a passionate but unknown individual probably wouldn’t attract so much attention.

The lesson we can all learn from this, is that the credibility we build in one area of life, is applicable to another, because of the trust we build with people is a personal thing and although our competencies may differ from one area to the next, our character carries through regardless. All the more value in the fact that Mr DiCaprio is putting first things first by addressing this crisis.

Here is a brilliant insight into how we can all prioritise our lives better and live with more integrity…

Almost any legend who has achieved a level of success will attest to the importance of knowing what you want to achieve and keeping a record of where you are relative to that success.

On Monday this week, the World Metrological Organisation (WMO) has announced that the global level of carbon dioxide, CO2, passed the 400 parts per million level. Why is this important? It’s important because this is one of the gases that acts like a blanket and is preventing the earth from keeping cool. This, in turn, causes ice caps to melt, sea levels to rise and a massive change in the biodiversity of the world. The biggest fact about this change, is that it is due to human activity. Research shows that the current level of CO2 is 144% higher than pre-industrial levels! As explained in this article on Mashable,

“The year 2015 ushered in a new era of optimism and climate action with the Paris climate change agreement. But it will also make history as marking a new era of climate change reality with record high greenhouse gas concentrations,”

Said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a recent statement. Legends need to keep a close eye on their progress in the same way as the WMO is keeping a close watch on the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. Rather than panicking or lamenting these facts, legends take a responsible approach. In this Huffington Post article, Astronaut Piers Sellers, now a leading climate scientist for NASA, notes that “there are ways out”;

“Rather than being, ‘oh my god, this is helpless,’ say, ‘ok, this is the problem, let’s be realistic and let’s find a way out of it.’ And there are ways out of it. If we stopped burning fossil fuels right now, the planet would still keep warming for a little while before cooling off again.”

Legends take responsibility and do what they can to make a change in a difficult circumstance. Here’s a further insight from legendary philanthropist Bill Gates, on why he values people who take responsibility for themselves and become agents of change.

What would you do if you met one of your childhood heroes?

What would you ask them??

Well, two filmmakers, Wesley Chan and Philip Wang had exactly that opportunity earlier this month at the Italian Premiere for Mr Hanks’ latest film “Inferno”. Yesterday they shared a video that will almost definitely bring a smile to your face – Tom Hanks performing a rap from the 1988 film, “Big.”

We know legends work really hard. But there are very few legends out there who don’t know how to have fun. They know when to be serious, and when to not take themselves seriously! Mr Hanks is one such example as we’ve seen before on the Legends Report… it’s no wonder why he is held in such high regard in the acting community.

P.S. It’s great to see the young filmmakers address Ron Howard and Tom Hanks as “Mr Howard” and “Mr Hanks”…it’s a small sign of respect in a world where most of us relate to celebrities and legends on a first name basis!
