What We Can Learn From England’s Failure | 69 Million Children ‘Left Behind’ | The Opportunity In The ‘Brexit’ Aftermath – Legends Report

By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International

On Monday night, the England football team lost to Iceland. While there is much drama about why it happened and who should leave and how much the players are paid, one thing that was abundantly clear is that the England players greatly struggled to deal with the pressure they faced on the night. As a result, basic mistakes were made and the panic was clear to see. It is a relatively young team and, if used well, they could actually transform as a team for the next major tournament in 2018. We can also learn a huge amount from this by asking ourselves two important questions;

How do I respond when I’m under a huge amount of pressure?

How do I respond when I fail at something when I think I shouldn’t have?

These are revealing questions because it’s in those moments that our character is brought to the surface.

While the world leaders have recently come together to ensure that ‘no one is left behind’ by 2030, in that there will be no one in extreme poverty anywhere in the world, UNICEF has this week come out with a report that raises huge concerns for this goal. It says that between now and then, 69 million children will die from totally preventable causes.

It also points in the direction of hope,

The Unicef report proposes five ways to improve the state of children: increase information on those being left behind; integrate efforts across sectors to tackle the many deprivations faced by children; harness innovation to accelerate progress; find new ways to finance efforts to reach the most disadvantaged children; and involve communities, businesses and citizens.

Involving communities, businesses and citizens is absolutely critical to providing solutions. Every legend knows that nothing gets resolved by individuals – it’s one of the reasons why the Legends Report team is developing projects to bring people from industry and local areas together. Finding The Opportunity In The ‘Brexit’ Aftermath

‘All great change is preceded by chaos.’ – Anon

Richard Branson has recently spoken about how Chinese investors are looking to pull out of the U.K. Scotland is potentially exploring independence as a country to remain part of the EU. The British Labour Party is amid chaos with its leadership in serious doubt. Britain is soon to have a new Prime Minister. Markets are plummeting and the Sterling is at its lowest in over 30 years. In short, there is chaos in virtually every industry.

No matter whether this affects you positively or negatively…or not at all in the short-term, one of the best questions we can ask ourselves is, what is the opportunity here? When legends are faced with moments of crisis – from Nelson Mandela to Mahatma Gandhi – they do not allow themselves to be scared by the circumstances around them…after all it does no good for anyone! While it can be tempting to talk about the way institutions are crumbling, they look at what they can do, what is within their control. Ultimately, that is the only thing that can create change and a better future.
